SPIDER BASS // Mixed By @jordanmencel // Syllo Radio An hour-long descent into the underground lair of a genre whispered about in record shops, chalked on bathroom stalls, and etched into the circuitry of old drum machines: SPIDER BASS.
Mixed By @jordanmencel
The story begins on a cold Düsseldorfian December in the late 1970s. Kraftwerk, weary from touring, supposedly dragged a Juno synthesizer out of a dusty storage cupboard. Upon switching it on, they discovered something horrifying and wonderful: a family of spiders had built a nest inside the power supply. The spiders’ webs created tiny, imperceptible distortions in the signal, warping the bass frequencies into something alien—half groove, half venom. One of the engineers is reported to have said: “It sounds like the future… but it’s crawling.”
Thus, Spider Bass was born.
Over the following decades, its traces can be found lurking in UK garage pirate radio tapes, hiding in the cracks of 2-step white labels, camouflaged in early breakbeat hardcore. Electro producers claimed to reject it, but listen closely: the scuttling hi-hats, the jittering basslines, the unnerving swing… spiders everywhere. Even jungle, at its darkest, couldn’t escape the web.
For years, Spider Bass remained an occult frequency, a ghost in the mix, dismissed by genre gatekeepers as “nonsense” or “not a real thing.” But that’s what they always say before they steal it and press it on vinyl. The spiders didn’t care—they kept weaving.
Here's an hour of twisted garage, creeping 2-step, over-legged breakbeats, and electro that doesn’t walk straight. It is evil. It is warped. like the sensation of a spider scurrying across the inside of your skull.
Genre purists will be furious. Good. Let them rage. The web has already caught them.
(Before anyone has a heart attack, this genre description is indeed completely sarcastic, the mix is just a bunch of twisted, intricate, Garage, 2Step, Breaks and Electro, bound together with a sprinkle of imagination)
